The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Charles Bowman

As the 690th Lord Mayor of the City of London, I am delighted to welcome you to one of the greatest and most culturally diverse capitals in the world – a city which brings together the modern and traditional, business and government, culture and leisure.

On Saturday 11 November, tens of thousands of people will line the streets of the City of London – known as the Square Mile, the ancient but vibrant business district around St Paul’s – for the Lord Mayor’s Show, a tradition which dates back to Magna Carta in 1215, but is still alive and well. The show, which is full of colour, character, diversity and pageantry, is an opportunity for Londoners and visitors alike to enjoy a family day out and is an important part of the UK’s celebratory calendar. Dancers, musicians, children from local schools, representatives from key professions and trades, and members of the Armed Forces take part to make it a varied and eye-catching spectacle.

This year’s procession will feature camels, vintage buses, an Achilles tank, Samba drummers, grannies on Segways, and an inflatable pig in a three-mile-procession made up of 7,000 people, 200 horses and 70 decorated floats. I will be waving to the crowds from the 18th century gold State Coach, which leaves the Museum of London only once a year – for the Show. The day finishes with a spectacular, free fireworks display on the Thames. It will be my privilege to serve as the global ambassador for UK-based financial and business services, working with City businesses and their communities to promote integrity and create a positive effect on society, as part of my ‘Business of Trust’ agenda. I very much look forward to my year in office.
